What Can Be Done Anytime

2026 | Oil on canvas | 91 ×72.7cm

English explanation after Japanese.

I understand making art as a “continuity of actions.”

When we make something, can we really define the act of making as only the time we spend physically working on it? Holding a paintbrush, moving the brush, choosing a color—none of these actions suddenly emerges in that particular moment. They are connected to what we have seen, felt, and experienced before, as well as to the countless events that have accumulated throughout our everyday lives.

When does making begin? For me, it does not begin at the moment I pick up a paintbrush. Making does not refer only to the time spent creating a work; rather, it is one continuous process that includes the actions and experiences that lead up to it.

Then, what is “expression”? For me, expression exists in the actions we take in each moment.

When we think of “expressing” something, it seems to inevitably involve the purpose of making someone else feel something. Even without the purpose of making someone feel something, each action naturally reflects what a person has lived and experienced up to that point. I believe that this is where expression exists.

When I see someone’s seemingly ordinary actions in everyday life, I sometimes sense something about that person’s state or way of thinking. There is not necessarily a clear intention to communicate something. And yet, when I see that action, I receive something from it.

Regardless of whether there is an intention to communicate something, an action performed by a person in that particular moment has the possibility of making someone else feel something. From this perspective, expression does not exist only within works of art; it already exists within our everyday actions. Perceiving something through another person’s actions can be understood in the same way as perceiving something through a work of art.

Expression does not arise only when we make works of art, and the act of perceiving does not arise only when we look at works of art. They already exist within our everyday lives. Even without consciously trying to “express” something, we are already expressing something through our actions in everyday life. Simply living and acting is already an act of expression.

An action does not simply emerge in the moment. Even an action that may seem, at first glance, to belong only to a particular moment does not exist in isolation; it emerges from a long process of accumulated experiences and actions. That process includes not only things we have consciously chosen, but also chance encounters, unexpected events, and things beyond our control. Therefore, I believe that each action carries with it the person’s life up to that point.

The actions involved in making a work are no different from any other actions in life. Holding a paintbrush, moving the brush, choosing a color—these actions emerge in that moment as part of everything that has accumulated through everyday life. The time spent making a work is no different from the time spent eating, talking with someone, or looking at something. All of these are continuous parts of a single life. Each action carries what has come before it and leads into the next. That is why I understand making as a continuity of actions that unfolds within life itself.
